A clogged toilet is one of the most common—and most frustrating—plumbing problems. But not every clog requires a plumber. Here’s how to know when you can handle it yourself and when to call a professional.

Try These DIY Methods First

The Plunger (Do It Right)

  1. Use a flange plunger (the kind with an extended rubber lip), not a cup plunger
  2. Make sure there’s enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger
  3. Insert the plunger at an angle to avoid trapping air
  4. Push down slowly, then pull up quickly—repeat 15-20 times
  5. Flush to test

Hot Water and Dish Soap

  1. Squirt dish soap into the bowl
  2. Pour a gallon of hot (not boiling) water from waist height
  3. Wait 10-15 minutes
  4. Try flushing

When to Call a Plumber

Call a professional if:

  • Plunging doesn’t work after multiple attempts
  • The toilet clogs repeatedly (could indicate a bigger problem)
  • Multiple fixtures are clogged or draining slowly
  • You hear gurgling from other drains when you flush
  • Sewage is backing up into your tub or shower
  • You’ve dropped something into the toilet that shouldn’t be flushed

What NOT to Do

  • Don’t use chemical drain cleaners – They can damage pipes and splash back
  • Don’t flush repeatedly – You’ll overflow the bowl
  • Don’t use a wire hanger – You can scratch the porcelain or push the clog deeper
