A clogged toilet is one of the most common—and most frustrating—plumbing problems. But not every clog requires a plumber. Here’s how to know when you can handle it yourself and when to call a professional.
Try These DIY Methods First
The Plunger (Do It Right)
- Use a flange plunger (the kind with an extended rubber lip), not a cup plunger
- Make sure there’s enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger
- Insert the plunger at an angle to avoid trapping air
- Push down slowly, then pull up quickly—repeat 15-20 times
- Flush to test
Hot Water and Dish Soap
- Squirt dish soap into the bowl
- Pour a gallon of hot (not boiling) water from waist height
- Wait 10-15 minutes
- Try flushing
When to Call a Plumber
Call a professional if:
- Plunging doesn’t work after multiple attempts
- The toilet clogs repeatedly (could indicate a bigger problem)
- Multiple fixtures are clogged or draining slowly
- You hear gurgling from other drains when you flush
- Sewage is backing up into your tub or shower
- You’ve dropped something into the toilet that shouldn’t be flushed
What NOT to Do
- Don’t use chemical drain cleaners – They can damage pipes and splash back
- Don’t flush repeatedly – You’ll overflow the bowl
- Don’t use a wire hanger – You can scratch the porcelain or push the clog deeper
