What is a "belly" in a sewer line?
A belly is a low spot where a section of pipe has sunk below its intended slope. Water and solids collect there instead of flowing downhill.
Causes
- Soil settling or poor compaction when the pipe was installed
- Erosion around the pipe from an existing leak
- Ground movement
Symptoms
- Recurring clogs at the same distance from the cleanout
- Standing water visible on camera
- Slow drainage that clearing doesn't fully fix
Repair
A minor belly holding a little water may only need monitoring and periodic cleaning. A significant one usually needs the section excavated and re-laid at the correct slope. Lining follows the existing pipe, so it doesn't correct a sag (repair options).
