Referral service, not a contractor. SF Drain & Sewer Pros does not perform plumbing, drain, or sewer work. We may be paid if you hire a provider through a partner link. Always confirm the provider's license and get a written estimate. How this works
Sewer backup: what to do right now
- Stop all water use: no flushing, showers, laundry, or dishwasher. Every gallon you use has to go somewhere, and right now it's coming back up.
- Keep people and pets away. Sewage contains bacteria and viruses. Don't let children touch it.
- Avoid electrical hazards. Don't walk through standing water near outlets or appliances. Shut off power to the area at the panel only if you can do so from a dry location.
- Check with neighbours. If several buildings are backing up, the public main may be involved. Call SF311.
- Call a drain professional to clear the main line, ideally from an exterior cleanout.
- Document everything with photos and video before cleanup, for insurance.
- Cleanup: category 3 ("black water") contamination of porous materials like carpet, pad, and drywall usually means removal, not just drying. For more than a small area, a water damage restoration company is appropriate.
What to tell the plumber
- Which fixtures are backing up, and since when.
- Whether you have an accessible cleanout, and where.
- Any past clogs or recent work on the line.
