Preventing drain and sewer clogs
Never down the drain
- Fats, oils, and grease (FOG): they cool and harden in pipes. Let them solidify and put them in the trash or compost bin.
- "Flushable" wipes, paper towels, and feminine products: they don't break down like toilet paper.
- Coffee grounds, eggshells, and fibrous scraps (celery, onion skins), even with a disposal.
- Medications: use a pharmacy take-back program instead.
Good habits
- Use hair catchers in showers and tubs.
- Run plenty of cold water with the disposal, and don't treat it as a trash can.
- Know where your sewer cleanout is, so a plumber can reach the main quickly.
- If you have big street trees and an older clay lateral, consider periodic camera checks.
Warning signs to act on early
- Gurgling toilets or drains
- Several fixtures draining slowly at once
- Sewage odour indoors or in the yard
- Water rising in the shower when the toilet is flushed
