San Francisco neighborhoods and older sewer lines

Sewer problems in San Francisco follow the housing stock. This is general guidance, not a property-specific assessment. A camera inspection is the only way to know your line's condition.

Older housing stock (many pre-war homes)

Neighborhoods with many Victorian- and Edwardian-era buildings, such as parts of the Mission, Haight-Ashbury, Noe Valley, Hayes Valley and the Western Addition, often have long-serving laterals. Original clay or cast-iron pipe can show root intrusion at joints, corrosion, or scale. If you don't know when your lateral was last replaced, a scope is worthwhile.

Mid-century row-house districts

Large parts of the Sunset and Richmond districts were built out in the early-to-mid 20th century, often with ground-floor garages. Floor drains and ground-floor fixtures are commonly the first place a backup appears. See floor drain backups.

Street trees

Mature street trees near the sidewalk are a frequent root source for the street-side part of the lateral. Responsibility for that section matters, so see side sewer responsibility.

Hills and slope

Steep lots can mean deeper or longer laterals and harder access, which affects repair method and cost. Ask contractors how access will be handled and whether trenchless is feasible (options).
