How to unclog a toilet, and when to stop

You'll need

Steps

  1. Stop the overflow. If the bowl is near the rim, don't flush again. Lift the tank lid and push the flapper closed, or close the supply valve behind the toilet.
  2. Plunge correctly. Seat the flange in the outlet, keep the cup under water, and use 10–15 firm push-pull strokes, keeping the seal. Then pull away sharply.
  3. Use a closet auger if plunging fails: feed the cable into the outlet, crank clockwise, and withdraw slowly.
  4. Test with a bucket of water before flushing normally.

Avoid chemical drain openers in toilets. They rarely work on these clogs and create a hazard for whoever works on the line next.
